5-speed transmission conversion

Hey, guys:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!!!

I've got a question regarding a 5-speed conversion in a Rootes product. I've heard over the years that there is some sort of a conversion that can be made using a Toyota 5-speed transmission (I think). Where can I get specifics on this?

But, for the most important part of the question, will this conversion fit a Hillman Husky, assuming it's already got a Series V 1725 in it? Has anybody out there ever done a conversion like this? If so, what type of modifications must be made?

Thanks,

i remember seeing a website where a guy in california i think had pictures of the way he did it. I think he used the sunbeam bellhousing and the toyota and cut the back off the 2 and had the toyota back plate welded to the sunbeam front piece. I tried googling but couldnt find it at the moment, but if you dig around out there, you should be able to find it. It had a lot of photos. Ill look some more and if i can dig it up in my history ill post again.

I usually visit the site every day. I'll be happy to share any info with you about the Toyota conversion. There are several options - Dellows is just one of them. I did not use a Dellows kit as they were non-responsive in my attempts to reach them. If you have access to a decent machine shop you can probably do a conversion without the need for either a Dellows or Conversion Components kit. A Toyota 5 speed will fit with not too much work. I've fitted a Celica 2.0 ltr and cast iron gearbox into a Sceptre, [Husky and Super Minx are all the same] and converted another Sceptre from auto to manual using the same 5 speed. A friend cut both bellhousings and re-welded. Worked out great, just needed a Toyota pilot bearing fitted in the crank shaft and a bit of fiddling around to get the rear gearbox mount sorted out. I used the Toyota mounts on the Rootes X-member. The gearbox came with the driveshaft yoke.

One thing to look out for is the Toyota shifter position, you may have to shorten the remote casing that holds the gear lever so that it comes up thro the floor in the original position. An Alpine engine sits further back on the front beam than does on a Husky. You may find it real easy to line up, depending on the gearbox you choose. I've also put the same 5 spd in a Tiger, a little shortening of the shifter housing was reqd, but easy to do.

toyota 5 speed

That conversion uses a Bellhousing out of a rapier (longer than Alpine one) then it is cut and heliarced to the tranny end of the toyota bell housing, with of courese the proper length for the toyota input front shaft. I think I have a rapier bell housing in my parts shed....If you need one let me know and I will look....Mike in fLORIDA

The Alpine bell housing will work as well for the Toyota conversion.

Happy holidays to you and all!

OK, so I've read all these post's and it seems that this conversion (for a Husky) requires you to weld a toyota bell housing onto another bell housing. Now you come along and say the Alpine BH will work as well...What do you mean? Does the Alpine BH have to be cut and welded to the Toyota BH or is it a direct match up w/the Alpine BH?
I've got an SV, 4 spd, no OD. Is it still required to cut and weld? Or buy a "Dellows" BH? Yes/No? Simple is good!
And what Toyota tranny?
Thanks

It is also possible to adapt a T5 to the Alpine bell housing. It has been done by Tigertr.
http://www.myturboalpine.com/mysunbeamalpine/Parts.html

I think it would be possible to make the adaptor in two parts, a ring to adapt the T5 transmission nose to the Alpine bell (press fit to the bell) and a plate to bolt them together. It would be very simple to make. A straight forward lathe turning exercise and an equally simple drill press operation. I have thought of exploring the possibility, but do not have an Alpine tranny or T5! Sort of like the riddle "If I had some eggs I'd have ham and eggs if I had some ham".
