What year, model is this engine? From the block, left side near front, just below head, +MB56977 and from front of engine, timing cover, or water pump housing, 72TM6059AA 17510.

What casting numbers by distributor or on the heads?
Post a pic.

I believe the 6059 is just the Ford basic part number for a timing cover. It falls within the Engine Base Assembly group, 6000-6898.
The TM might be for Truck/Performance vehicle.
But the 72 does not follow Ford part number formats. 1972 would be D2. So it’s probably a casting number.

Is this a V8? If I substitute D2 for 72 I find

It is a V6 with staggered exhaust ports

It is definitely a Cologne Engine. It is also a V6.

The rear exhaust port in the picture from the looks of it has two (2) exhaust ports mergered into one unlike the 1974 - 78 2.8 V6 Cologne that has the Siamese Exhaust ports side-by-side.

The "74 TM" markings on the 74-78 Cologne are distinct for the 1974 V6

The casting numbers ("6 71") in this PIC indicate to me it is a much earlier Cologne V6. The reason I was assking if the engine could be identified was I am not at all falilar with these type/style V6's. I am assuming it is of the European usage primarily.

Mag, I took another good look at the engine and believe the exhaust ports are "not" staggered. Take a good look and you will see what I mean, the exhaut manifolds has "only" two (2) ports in the manifold, ulike the Mutt II 1974-1978 V6 engine. It looks as if the rear exhaust ports in the head are routed into one (1) outlet for the manifold.

A friend of mine may login and get me straight on this soon.

The A in the pic would indicate it is a 2.6
Ford also had a 2.3 V6, which also had a block casting cod of A.
Dan, I don’t see the pics you mention.

I'm a little suspicious of the part number that Svein Arne Hagen provided, since it indicates that it was first produced in 1974. We know that there were 2.0 liter Cologne V-6 Capris as early as 1970. There may be other earlier part numbers.

2.4V6D1986-89ChainWe don't know much about this one. It was apparently used in some European Scorpios. It is apparently a close relative of the 2.9, with an 84mm bore.

A picture of the exhaust ports / manifold would be very useful.

FWIW, the Ford 2.3 and 2.6 V6 engines had a pair of siameesed exhaust ports on each side as shown in the video in post #8.

Have not seen a Ford 2.6 in an Alpine in a long time, but I remember the peoples choice award at SUNI XXIII (Charleston, SC in 2002) being won by Bob & Judy Sharkey with a 2.6 in an early Alpine.

This is a 2.8 with the dual exhaust which came out of a TVR 280i. Was hoping to get headers for it but opted for the US version with siamese exhaust ports and Dan’s headers .The Alpine pictured had a 2.6 Capri pictured in orange. The current owner is putting a 2.8 with Dan’s kit.

Al, I lknew you would come thru.... The PIC of the head you posted is exactly what I was trying to explain. It has two 'holes" for all three exhaust ports, unlike the Siamse design on the 2.8 V6 pictured below.

POSTs 3 and 5
Is there a picture in post 1? All I see is a rectangle with a question mark in a blue square.

You actually have it backwards. The head with the two exhaust ports has the Siamesed port.

The second-generation Cologne V6 was introduced in 1974. It displaced 2.8 L; 170.4 cu in (2,792 cc) with a bore and stroke of 93.03 mm × 68.5 mm (3.66 in × 2.70 in), and used a geared camshaft design. While based on the 2.6, the larger bore necessitated a different block.[2] The European version used a "siamesed" two-port exhaust manifold, similar to the one used on the V4, while the American version used three-port heads.
