what are all these shocks?!

today i started replacing my rear springs with some new 'flying tiger' ones and i have a few questions.

1) as i removed the old spring i started to wonder about the strange koni horizontal dampers on there. i've always know they were there but never took much notice. what is the effect of these and should i use them with the new springs? how can i test, adjust them? they seem increadibly stiff!

2) the rear end of the new spring is coiled the opposite way. is this ok?

3) the off-center front bush is towards the top on the old spring and towards the front on the new one. has is just moved over time?

4) there were some flat rubber washers either side of this front bush but they don't fit with the new spring. it looks like they are not needed with the new spring. is that ok?

5) the main rear shocks are koni 82-1348's. any opinions on this shock? and how can i adjust it?

6) that central allan bolt the holds the spring together and holds the u-bolt plate is very hard the tighten. i didn't get i all the way into the nut threads. i'm thinking of getting a longer bolt and a nyloc nut for it. is that a good idea?

many thanks, again!

odl21,

Is there any possibility that your car was used competitively in the past?

For question #3, Rootes installed the offset bushing with the hole at the top to help give more compliance to the ride when encountering a bump.

Not sure about your new springs but I was thinking that most competition type springs did not use the offset bushing.

#6 > If you are having to assemble these springs you will probably have to clamp the center of the leaves together in a vice or with clamp(s) of some type before you can tighten the bolt.

Please be VERY CAREFUL if you find you need to assemble in this manner. Compressed springs can be deadly if they get loose.

I will let someone else with more experience take a stab at answering the rest of your questions.

Good luck with the installation,

thanks husky_drvr,

i think the previous owner had planned to build hot track car. it has a mildly cam'ed 302, massive carb, urethane bushings, konis etc. he bought a few more parts such as a posi, new springs and wilwood brakes but never got round to installing them before he had to sell it. unfortunately he sold the brakes separately...

about, #3 the new one does have the offset bushing but its towards the front as shown in the picture.

#6 - the springs were assembled but with the plate that holds the u bolt so i had the remove the little allan bolt to attach the old plate. i used clamps to put it back but its not really long enough. and the doesn't seem to be anything to stop it working loose.
