Were the water pumps originally alloy? the only pump I can find now is the cast iron body piece. What color should we paint this thing, silver?

Early cars had the cast iron pumps painted black. There is a difference in the series 1 and 2 pumps series 2 is longer.

When I got my Series IV it had a cast iron black water pump on it. When that went bad in the 90's, Curt at Classic Sunbeam sold me an alloy pump with the explanation that the cast pumps were no longer available.

Cheers!

the later series has an obviously larger bore. The shorter early series unit was orininal before refurb and paint but he taller unit is an old remanf part with fresh paint.

The taller looks very much more efficient than the early series. And being taller it brought the fan nearer the rad for greater efficiency i would think.

Hope this helps
