Speedo Cable, Series II

Is it most common that the spedometer cables whines and makes the speedo needle bounce about if the cable itself is worn out? Time to replace the cable; right? This versus needing to rebuild the speedo head itself. The whine starts in around 40 mph. Thanks!

Try lubricating the cable. Disconnect the head and pull out the inner cable, apply a light grease to the cable and replace it. Don't grease the top 3-4 inches as otherwise it can make its way up into the speedo head. Also check that the cable has not been badly routed - tight curves should be avoided.
