Serial Number Quiz

I have a 65 Alpine that is an automatic.
According to the 65 Alpine history the automatics had a serial number beginning B941. My Alpine is a B940.

Can anyone figure this out?

Did someone modify the transmission tunnel to fit the automatic or does it look uncut? Are the original rivets on the serial number plate?

According to the "Series" history under Technical Data on this site, Both B940 (SIV) and B941 (Series "IVa") vehicles were availlable with the Borg Warner automatics, so I see no mystery here.

The simple change in S/N's mid way thru SIV production added a digit and also indicated switch to all synchro manual tranny. But the automatics were available throughout SIV production. If your VIN number is a B940 number that means your "1965 Alpine" was built before Aug 1964. But still could easily be titled as 1965 depending on the date and state where it was first licensed. And if the automatic was factory installed the seriel number should have a BW stamped at the end.
