It's described in the shop manual, I believe, but I don't have mine handy just now. If I recall correctly, though, I think you remove the grease fitting from the bottom of the ball joint and you insert this tool - depending on how much then sticks out you can determine if your ball joint has deteriorated (as the ball will wear down into the socket over time).
