Offy and Carter

I finally completed the installation of the Offy manifold with Carter AFB 400 cfm carb. I took the car for a short ride and was very pleased with the difference in performance compared to the original manifold/2 barrel carb setup. As the road salt is now washed off the asphalt roads I can take the car for a longer ride and determine fuel economy plus performance. I am pleased!

Paul, What did you find on the vacuum leak with the intake?
Cannot say for sure. Removed the setup and used Offenhauser gaskets along with Gray Permatex. I torqued to 22 lbs. I originally used FelPro gaskets. When I installed the carb I used gasket adhesive on the 1/4" spacer with new gaskets on top and bottom. The Offy and Carter setup is much more responsive than the original Autolite.

Sounds like you worked your way into a real winner. I do know that little Carter is a terrific carb. Bet you like the mileage.

I took the car for a nice 12 mile ride this afternoon. Huge difference in performance with this new setup. Last thing to do yet is get the dual exhaust installed. Very pleased so far. I have no idea yet about economy.

New dual exhaust is now installed! I welded a reinforcement 3" pipe in the X frame hole to provide additional strength. The Jose headers are not straight back so it necessitated an additional curve in the new 2" exhaust pipe. From the X frame the pipes were routed under the axle. The new mufflers are 18" glass packs from Walker. (If I painted them red they would pass for Cherry Bomb mufflers.) The finishing touch is supplied by the chrome extensions which bring the exhaust out past the bumper. It is definitely louder than the single exhaust with turbo muffler that it replaced. Louder but not raucus.

Please take a photo of the system if you get the car back up on a lift. I am especially interested in seeing how you routed the Jose headers.
Thanks!
