Next question--carb spacer

OK, I set the Holley 4 bbl. on top of the Offy manifold just to see how everything would fit. The throttle arm (right term? the thingy that the accelerator cable attaches to that controls the carb) grazes against the valve cover (stock valve cover). Are folks using a spacer between the intake manifold and the base of the carb? Raising it a few mm. would allow it to clear. Jeez, a long day . . .

Depending upon how thick a carb-to-manifold gasket you're using, you might be able to pick up several mms by using a thicker gasket. Helps insulate the carb from engine heat, too.

Jose says I may get into hood-clearance issues if I lift it too much. I need to go to the instruction cd on this. It may be this Holley has that automatic transmission kick-down on the throttle arm, which I won't need. Removing it will probably give me the small space I need.

a 4 barrel, what engine are you using?

Mr. gasket sells a various adapters . I think PoorBoys has a selection. haven't been there for a while. Ther in a different country.

Try the bubble come test if you think there is a clearance problem. I wad of gum sitting on a quarter. If it stcks to the hood. It's close.

Thanks, Mike. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.

The spacers are only $10 or so, so I can try one if other measures don't work. Holley also makes an interesting low-rise air cleaner (sort of wing-shaped) but they're pretty pricey.

It's the Ford 2.8. I wonder if anybody else has had this problem with the stock valve covers.

Sam,

This is a common problem with the four barrel. Some carburetors came with an automatic kick down switch activator. This particular cam can either be removed or ground down so that it doesn't hit the rocker cover. If you think you'd like to lift it a bit, get a thicker base gasket. I think they come in .125" thickness. That should lift it enough to clear the rocker cover.

I have ground off the auto kickdown portion of the lever on mine. It clears with no spacer. You'll want to avoid using a spacer if at all possible since the hood to air cleaner clearance is pretty tight.
Good luck!

It real simple I bent mine at a small angle to clear the rocker cover. Not a big deal but stay away from the spacer. Hood(Bonnet) clearance would be too close.
