Mounting S-V fuel filler cap

On an Alpine Series V, which way does the fuel filler cap go? Hinge forward (left opening) or hinge rearward (right opening)? Memory says hinge to the rear and in the body detent but how many time has it been taken apart?

hinge to the front. other wise it could blow open going down the road if it didn't get locked.

Hinge to the rear, even though it seems wrong. The detent for the hinge is at the rear and it won't open the other way round.

It opens either way, hinge front or hinge rear. More worried about damaging the paint with the fuel filler cap than correct; figured the factory had a reason one way or the other.

you can mount it either way, but the correct way is to have the hinge at the front. that way if it's left open it doesn't get torn off going down the road. now as far as the indentation in the body at the rear of the opening, it is there so that when you press the button and the latch releases the latch does not scratch or hang up on the body. take a real good look at how the indentation is made. if properly installed there is no interference of the hinge with the body so no reason for the indentation at the front. if someone has a cap that won't open with the hinge at the front they need to inspect the fender and will probably find body damage.
