Leak down test

Ok, I am about to do a leak down test. Should the engine be hot?
I will remove all the plugs for the test.
Is it ok to remove the rocker cover to view TDC of each cylinder?
I am not sure the best way to find TDC, some say to put a long rod down into the cylinder via the spark plug opening but I worry about pinching it in the cylinder or causing damage?
I did the test cold and just pushed the car back and forth in the garage watching the valves. It was hard to get a consistent reading but when cold the tester read low leakage (again this was a cold engine).
What type or range should one look at for a 60,000+ engine?
I will look for air pressure at the carbs, exhaust and vent.
Any other things to look for?
Regards,
Andrew
