how to remove series 2 gas tank

Is there a howto for removal and reinstallation of the series 2 gas tank?

I'm thinking about having mine resealed if it's not too much trouble to remove. When the car was running I was seeing quite a bit of rust and debris collecting in the glass bowl of the fuel pump. Does anyone still dip and reseal gas tanks?

In my experience, most radiator repair shops also seal gas tanks. Get out your phone book (how old school!) and call around.

I had one of the authorized shops in Stockton CA do the tanks of my SV.

You might want to check them out. gastankrenu.com

Very reasonable price and a lifetime warranty was included.

If there aren't any shops near where you live you can ship tanks to them as I recall.

Cheers,
John

Todd and John - thanks for the help.
I called around Seattle and found one shop in Tacoma that wants over $400 and 8 weeks to do the job. Seems a bit steep. They also apply a flexible polyurethane lining to the inside - does anyone have experience with this kind of repair?

I got the tank out today. It wasn't hard but it would have been much easier if I had jacked the car a bit higher in the air and taken the muffler off first. I'll probably do that when I do the install to avoid scratching up the fresh paint.
I also removed the tank + support ring as one unit, which was much easier than trying to separate the tank from the ring while it was still under the car.

I noticed that the fitting on the tank is a bit chewed up which may explain why it was hard to seal in the past. I suspect it may be repairable if I file the end flat again (after all traces of gas are removed from the tank!). Anyone know what thread the early gas tanks use?

George,
The previous owner of the RHD had the tank dipped and coated by the dipper. What he failed to do was to check for leaks and do the repairs before coating the interior of the tank. One of the problems with an early series tank is the way it mounts to the car since it hangs under the car . Doug found numerous pin holes in the seam where the two pieces of the tank are welded together. If not repaired the coating would be like a band aid. Leaks would show up again so check using a light to find leaks before coating.

Cost

My bill was $225 I think for the two tanks and all connecting tubes sand blasted in and out/coated and baked with the polyurethane material.

Exteriors of everything were painted black for me also.

About 2" of each end of the connecting tubes had to be sanded in order to slip the fresh rubber connecting hoses in place however.

Voila, no more particles of paint in the gas line clogging the filter/carb.
