Hi,

If it is a true Holbay engine, someone is going to get a bargain. Can you tell by casting numbers or would it need to be disassembled?

Regards, Robin.

Numbers would be important but who can know without opening it up to see the head, camshaft and flat tops .. ??

you can tell it was in something prior to 1968. look at the water pump, thermostat housing and motor mounts . it also has a pre 1968 alternator. it may only have a holbay valve cover .

The motor also has the finned oil pan and the dizzy does not have a vacuum advance on it. Wonder if the Holbay head is a different casting number than the standard head? Eric G. you got a Holbay head in the pile?

The water outlet "Boss" is not drilled, as is the case on a Holbay head.

Think that is pretty standard on all the late no tube around the spark plug heads, least do not recall ever seeing one with the intake water heat deal on a late style head.

One thing to look for are the intake ports on the head-the Holbay's are much smaller than the standard Alpine's head.

The easiest way to spot the holbay head is the intake ports (smaller) and even more obvious the Combustion chambers.. they are the kidney shaped ones.

One difficulty was the engine pictured was assembled, so the internals were not visible.

How the Holbay Rapiers and Hunters worked their heaters or did they have heaters.. ?? Doesn't the hot water circulate through the head ??

allan,
one heater hose hooks to the water pump, the other hooks to the thermostat housing .there are no water lines hooked to the head ,the same as the series 5 since there was no water run thru the intake .
