Fuel Injected Tiger

I finally got my car started. Had a little trouble though as it wouldn't run at all with the RPM module hooked up. I think there was a problem with the module. It would crank over but the fuel pump wouldn't even work...which means the tach signal wasn't working.

I took the RPM module out and it fired up right away. I didn't run it long as they claim it can hurt the ECU. I picked up an Accel 300+ ignition for it so it will now have a true clean RPM signal for the ECU. I'm hoping to get it installed in the next few days.

Hi Doug,

That is no good, but I'm glad you now have things in hand. Just curious, what ignition setup did you have prior to purchasing the Accel unit? What made you choose Accel (I don't know much about them)? I had my own dramas, but they were of my own doing (a liitle embarrassing too  ). As the tank had been completely drain of fuel, I only put five litres of fuel in to check for leaks (you can probably see where this is going). Well in my hesitation to get the Tiger running, I forgot to add more fuel. I got maybe 500 metres down the road and she conked out. After a couple of unsuccessful starts, I realised the issue and walked home to get my fuel can. I added some fuel, but the damage was done. I obviously ran the pump dry too long and damaged the pump windings. See I told you it was embarrassing... :D . I bought a new bosch pump to get me going, so take two this weekend. Can you post some more pictures when your complete?

Regards, Robin.

Ive got to tell you, just connecting the coil- to the ECU can cause instant grievous damage to the ECU since the coil- signal can reach hundreds of volts.
You should not have connected it that way even for an instant.

Hi,

I'm not sure what's in the rpm module (not much from its size), but I would assume it's basically a filter circuit to ensure the CPU gets a nice clean signal. If you didn't have a good earth (the module having two of them), wouldn't give you a good signal. Anyway, fingers crossed with the CPU and hopefully you will soon be on the road.
I ended up getting the Tiger running last night. It fired straight up and was idling perfectly. This time I will ensure I have more petrol in the tank  . Just need to finish the pump mounting bracket and that is it. Really looking forward to some road time.

Regards, Robin.

Whats in the converter is a simple circuit which takes the nasty ringy coil- impulse and turns it into a low level signal that looks like and is compatible with a VR trigger found in many aftermarket distributors.

Bottom line is that the ECU is expecting a signal in the low volts to tens of volts, and the coil- signal is hundreds of volts.

The ignition set-up I was using was a Pertronix. I'm still using it but it's now connected to an Accel 300+ ignition module. I've only got a few minutes run time so far but am amazed how much smoother it seems to idle. I need to finalize some of the wiring and then will hopefully take it out on the road in the next couple of days. I'll update with more pictures asap.

I'm amazed how quickly those pumps die after going dry. I saw on the FAST forums that many people had the same problem and killed their pumps too. Glad you got it squared away and are back and running.

Hi,

I spoke with Matt Maxwell about the problem and apparently it is covered by warranty, but still waiting to hear back from him. The pumps are actually a Carter P5000 pump and were chosen for their long service life (just don't run out of fuel!!). My new pump is not as quiet and is larger in diameter, but is equal on specs. I spoke to a local efi specialist regarding protecting pumps and they suggested a surge tank setup and a float type setup (not sure about the fine details), but that is a lot of work and something else to fail.

Regards, Robin.

So the pump has a warranty even if it was run dry? I'm a little concerned about this on my car as the pump isn't as low as I would like it to be.

Thanks for letting us know what kind of pump it is. It is a quieter pump than the Holley Red pump that my car had before so I'm pleased.

I told COMP (Matt Maxwell) what had happened and he did tell me via email that it was covered. I will have to send it back to them so they can confirm it is faulty. As long as your pump has a good gravity feed you should be ok. The other option is either move the pump lower or a surge tank with a lift pump if your having starvation issues.

Hi,

I had my first experience of the ez-efi system this afternoon. If it is anything to go by, I will be very pleased. As Bill Attalla reported all those weeks ago, the smooth idling, great throttle response without hesitation and no fuel smell. All I needed was a slight adjustment of the throttle return spring. I would be interested to see the outcome across the rev range on a dyno.

Regards, Robin.

Great to hear. I know my experience is amazing.

Hi Bill,

I assume you are still running trouble free. Have you noticed any difference in your fuel economy? I will give mine a test on Sunday all going well. It will give the ECU a good chance to fine tune the fuel map.

Running trouble free. Have not thought to check the mileage situation, waiting until a few more mile. Next tank of gas, though the weather is getting a bit snowy here.

Hi Doug,

How is your installation going? We haven't heard back from you for a few days now and I'm curious to know if your running.

Regards, Robin.

The install is complete just needs to be driven now for tuning. I'm doing a few other things on the car too so it's not quite buttoned up and ready to be driven. Hopefully soon though as I'm dying to see how it is on the street. I do have some photos I'll upload later.

The other things I'm doing are a little touch up paint on the hood and aligning the pulleys. They have always been just a little off and I was getting a fine rubber dust all over the engine compartment. I figured now was the time to finally take care of it as it's been this way for 6 years.

additional photos

Here are a few additional shots. It looks pretty busy but everything has a purpose.

This car was originally converted to a V8 about 6 years ago and there were lots of little details that were improvements from the original V8 install. Little things like a clip to hold the heater hose at the back of the alternator bracket. These were things that I could see could or had caused wear issues or rubbing. I also spent a little extra time making sure the firewall was sealed so I don't get fumes inside the car.

I still need to wrap the wires to the throttle body in heat shielding. Looking at the pictures I can see I need to add a little grommet where the fuel return line enters the car back by the spare tire well. One more little thing to add to the list of things to finish.

Hi Doug,

Nice job with your installation. Where did you mount the ignition module you bought? Have you had it running again? I found it hard to keep things tidy as well, but you can always tidy up things later once your back on the road. Hopefully you will soon be able test out your new system.

Regards, Robin.

It's mounted on the driver side fender. With the Vintage Air heater, radio, and ECU there was no room at all under the dash. This is a Hillman Husky so there is a parcel tray under the dash and I didn't want to have to modify that. I really wanted the Accel out of sight but it would have just taking too much to do so it's in the engine compartment. I may shorten the wires up on it later so they are less visible.

The car seems to idle better with the Accel unit. Maybe the better spark does make a difference.

I've finally gotten mine to the point where I can start driving it. My hood was getting repainted...now that it's done I should be able to give a drivers test very soon.
