back axle whine

OK this has probably been talked about many times but I dont seem to find info that replicates my problem.

I have a constant drone/whine from the back of my V, it reminds me of the noise my Fathers 1922 Bean and 1927 Austin 12/4 had. I always assumed that it was a worn Crown wheel & pinion, but of course it could be a bearing or a loosening CW

What is the most likely cause of this drone, would it be a CW coming loose or just all round wear.

Thanks

Nick

My experience is it's just wear or pitting, or mis-adjustment. But I think others have found loose CW.

I have found the whine to always be loose ring gear bolts.
The washers are soft, and degrade. If you don't pull it out and put new washers, you run the risk of a bolt actually coming out and going into the gears and, Bang, exploded rear-end. This has happened to me twice!
If you catch it early, you might save the gears, but if left un-attended, it will always whine, even after washer replacement.

If you do this job use Loctite and new bolts. Don't use new washers, but use the old ones or no washers at all!

Peter
