Hi George,
The little 2.8 V6 doesn´t have the torque to be able to use top gear in the six speed. The six speed was made for larger, more powerful V8 engines The 1986-1993 5.0 V8 T5 has a .68 overdrive, and should have a set of low gears (4.11, 4.56) to let cruise easily at freeway speeds. The 5.0 T5 will work OK with a set of 3.89 gears, but would work better with the 4.11s.
