1962 Series II - Engine Assembly

I just picked up my engine from the machine shop. Time to assemble! I have built several Chrysler big blocks & other domestic motors....but find myself completely intimidated with this small British block! I shall be asking many defining questions & sounding like an idiot along the way, I am sure....

I have a Manual & my brain likes to follow directions to a "T":
CRANKSHAFT -
"Before replacing the front and rear main bearing a very small quantity of Wellseal (or other non-setting jointing compound) should be painted onto the sides of the cylinder block recess into which the bearing caps locate. See Fig. 32 under "OIL SUMP—to refit".

Using joint compound is my first head scratching moment on the assembly.
Is this something more than Permatex Ultra Black gasket sealer?

Thanks!

I like your detailed approach, and that you read the manual! So, you are sealing the main bearing cap to the block. The black RTV cures with exposure to air, so might not be a good choice. Best choice is a sealer intended to seal where air will not reach it to help it cure; "anaerobic sealer" https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/PTX7651189 This stuff was spec'd for sealing an OHC Pontiac four cylinder in the mid 1980's, under similar conditions (Air does not reach the joint). These next two seal fine for VW air cooled crankcase halves are recommended for aircraft piston engines. This is the one I like; https://www.permatex.com/products/g...ermatex-super-300-form-a-gasket-sealant-4-oz/ and this one is good too: https://www.permatex.com/products/g...tion-form-a-gasket-no-3-sealant-liquid-16-oz/ Now, regarding the original stuff, my guess is it was like "Indian Head" shellac, or this stuff: https://www.permatex.com/products/g...rmatex-original-gasket-shellac-compound-2-oz/ And, for goodness's sake, do not use this: https://www.permatex.com/products/g...nts/permatex-form-a-gasket-no-1-sealant-3-oz/ (It hardens and makes permanent!)

Watch Tim R's latest video. He's putting together a 1592. Lots of good tips,
as usual.
