I really don't know the answer to that. Presently (the way its configured), I get emails anytime there is a new registrant, but I'm not given a decision to approve or disapprove. So, I have to quickly log into the forum control panel (every morning when I'm drinking my first coffee) to band these morons. On the average, I see about 4-5 new registrations per day and about 90% is spam.
(The name "Man" and "1" is a sure giveaway, yes, no doubt. And about 75% of them have gmail.com addresses. If you don't want to be targeted as spam, don't use a gmail.com addess)

Is there perhaps a "stricter" membership setting where the prospective member is on hold till someone qualifies them?

I mean of all the forums I frequent, this one is the easiest to join and post.

So you're saying that there aren't any unopened PM's previously sent by these jokers that are waiting to bite somebody?

Yes, they have been banned and we have taken other steps in order to stop their access. During the next little while please take care and check back on the forum for more information.

Andrew

No, if a member has been away from their computer and these guys made a PM to their email address, there could be an email sitting in their inbox looking to be opened.

What I am saying is that we have stopped them from doing it again. It is possible for another Jack@$$ with a new IP and email address may be able to do this again.

We could also make it so that a the minimum donation of $5.00 is required to join the forum. The people who do this kind of thing (spam, porn and so on) would not spend the $5.00 to post their sh$# on our site. I don't think that this is a great deal to ask for what the forum provides and it would stop a great deal of our work with spam and hackers. Yet I do not what to stop our members from the forum enjoyment as I know that there are many people who use the forum, sell parts and visit the club site that do not make a donation for us to keep this going. I do not wish to see these people drop away from the group as I would like to think that we are here to help everyone and keep these great little cars on the road.

We should talk about this!

Andrew

Yes, but it (Mozilla Firefox) can be exploited as well.

I've used Firefox exclusively on my PC's for several years. Firefox gets high marks from my techy son and sons-in-law for keeping things clean. BUT - they also tell me that Firefox, like IE, is not 100% foolproof.

Be smart - be wary of such messages as that which recently visited some of us - and use good protective software to help avoid most spam. (No pun intended but it almost sounds like an ad for Trojans, doesn't it!) :)

Andrew, I think that is a great idea. Might consider lowering the fee to $1.00, but let's face facts: There is nowhere else a person can reach such a large segment of Sunbeam owners for less than $5.00.

Just a reminder to all that whatever site you visit where you have to log in, be sure to log out!

We had our hotmail contact list hijacked and about 200 people received spam using our email address. Resetting our password stopped the b*st*rds

Andrew,

It will be a PITA for you and Jan, but I can't think of a better solution.

Thanks,
