...and free-wheeling trans-axle (let off the gas and it was like throwing it out of gear).

Many of the newer automatics work that way... my Toyota Sienna does. It will quite easily free-wheel down hills... but then if you touch the brake you can feel the trans re-engage to give you engine braking.

The free-wheeling on the Saab was initially because of the 2-stroke engine. There was no oil injection. You had to mix the gas and oil. So using engine braking could starve the engine for lube.
