Installing the front timing cover on a 2.8 V6.

When the front timing cover is to be installed on the 2.8 Ford V6 block, you must be careful to have the cover aligned with the crank hub. If it is off by as little as .010, it could lead to a large oil leak at the front of the engine. To align it properly, you need to install the cover, with all the apropriate gaskets, not forgetting the two small rubber O rings that seal the water pump to bolck passages. Do not use any gasket sealers, because you want the cover to be able to slide around and center itself to the crank hub.

Make sure that you use a slight bit of grease to lube the seal before you put the cover on. Now put the cover onto the engine block, putting the cover bolts on just finger tight, then back off a quarter turn, so the cover can move. These engines do not have the dowell pins that other engines to align the cover, so you need the hub to align it. Once the cover is on with the bolts loose, put the crank hub onto the crank, making sure it is all the way down and seated with the crank bolt. When you've done this, the cover will have aligned itself to the hub. Now that the cover is aligned, tighten all the bolts to spec. You will now have a leak free front main seal.
