Brake Master push rod

Putting a new brake master in my series 2. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the sliding sleeve and if it needs to be captured by a wider circlup which it seems to show in the workshop manual?? Many thanks

The "sliding sleeve is held in hole of the matching Girling rubber gaitor. It prevents the rod to wear the rubber bore when moving. No relation with the circlip...

P.S. It pays off to clean the rod from any trace of corrosion and give it a light smear with grease though...
