My alpine fastbacks veneer dash needs either replacing or renovating any tips guys as I tend to attack things with vigour and guess what happens? , so I thought it might be an idea to ask for tips this time.....;)

Twenty-some years ago, I made a replacement wood dash for my Hillman Hunter GT. I believe the Alpine GT dash is similar. A brief outline of what I did:

Use the old dash as a pattern, cut a new dash from a piece of marine ply of the right thickness.

Cut out the holes for the instruments, switches etc.

I had a company specialising in veneering furniture glue on a new veneer. They used a heated press and probably did a better job than i could.

To finish the dash, I used a polyurethane marine spar varnish. I started with1 part varnish and 3 parts thinners a,d allpied several coats, then a 1 to 1 mix and several more coats, then 3 to 1 and finally unthinned varnish. Took a couple of weeks.

After it had cured, I sanded with 600 then 1000 wet & dry, then polished with cutting compound.

Still looked good 5 years later.

There are probably better finishes around now.

Good Luck!

Just what is wrong with it? Cracked? Yellowed? Scratched?

the cracks are not in the wood ,but in the clear coat applied over the wood.find a craft shop that makes things such as clocks out of wood and have them remove the clear and recoat it. i have five 69 alpines and only one hasn't had cracks.i had a local guy that does wood crafts for sale at flea markets do one for me and it has held up great.the one without cracks was stored inside for 32 years so it will probably need it before long.
