my rear main seal is leaking on my 85 2.8, I have been reading that you need a special tool from ford to install the new seal correctly, is this true? there must be a trick to installing it without the tool :(

Hi Gary,

I have never used any special tool to install the rear main seal into the 2.8 V6. Just take care as you tap it around the edges to install it.

Not to disagree with Jose, but I had a little trouble installing the rear main on mine, and had to throw two of them away when I couldn't get them to install straight.

The seal has a thin rubber/plastic coating over the metal body that seemed to catch, causing problems.

I must admit that I don't install seals on a daily basis, but I have done quite a few. It was difficult to keep it straight by tapping around the edges, so I turned a piece of round stock to allow me to tap it in straight. Third time was a charm for me....

Check your loacal auto parts store for a seal driver set. Here, the Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts have a tool loan program. Basically you pay the price of the tool, which is refunded when you return it.
