Does anyone know what the RAS stands for on this VIN plate (see picture). Its from a nice Series II Alpine that is on eBay. Thanks.

RAS stands for Rootes Armstrong Siddeley the 6 digits are the production line numbers (no connection to the VIN).

As noted the Alpine SI until lateish SII production was subcontracted to armstrong siddley. The RAS tag is their conpany reference for the construction.
The oval tags were the body ID as it got sent down the line and the VIN identified the car ( and any specific orders )
Thr SAL tag is introduced when production went back in house.
Note Tigers have a JAL tag.. J = JENSEN identifying their body constuction. And also have a VIN
