Planning to go back to Europe next spring. Figured I'd start in the UK. Is there a Rootes Museum? Also, who are the top suppliers I might visit?

Would be open to recommendations.

Hi Nick,

The nearest thing to a Rootes museum is the Museum of British Road Transport in Coventry. They've got a fairly large section devoted to the Rootes Group.

You might find this handy: http://www.sunbeam.org.au/museums/

If you go to Coventry probably worth a look at the old Rootes factories too before they're redeveloped.

The top suppliers? Alpine West Midlands (not terribly far from Coventry, so that could work in) and the Sunbeam Spares Company come to mind.

How about the Rootes Archive Centre too? http://www.rootesarchivecentre.com/

Pity you couldn't have gone over a couple of years ago. The Gaydon referred to in the link below is the site of the Heritage Motor Museum. It's also dear to my heart because I operated from there in my last 18 months in the RAF, at which time it was the home of 232 OCU (Operational Conversion Unit), training Canberra aircrews to operate the Victor nuclear bomber.

If anyone visits the museum, be sure to watch the short film they have of Victors taking off, including one (#XA935) I often flew in, although I don't know if I was flying the day they shot the amateur 8mm film. If you see it, bear in mind that you're sitting exactly where the runway was, so they are essentially taking off over your head.

Only a Tiger?

Only a Tiger? Oh gee... :D

When I get the trip firmed up, we can set up lunch or coffee. Thank you. That's kind of you.

Make sure your rental car has SatNav. Without it, we'd probably still be circling a roundabout in Surrey.
