Thoughts on originality

I've got an early (late 1959) series I that's getting restored slowly. I found a really clean Series 2 windscreen frame with super nice original chrome and I have a set of series II window rails. Does it matter if I mix these parts with my series I? Is close enough good enough? I got the frame for $50 and I'm sure rechroming my rough series I frame will cost a ton.

I think it is a personal choice.
1) You can go totally original with all parts, many do and that is the fun aspect of period restoration. But you have to be picky about it.
2) You can do what I did, leave the car very original but minor mods for daily life: I have an MG choke cable and knob because they work great, Weber, Electronic ignition and a Brake master off a Triumph.
3) Or, you can Jose it and build a car with modern running gear but outwardly original. (AKA The Dark Side)
Sounds like you are thinking the second. If you are like me, don't try to pass it off as a No. 1 on ebay, the guys on this site can spot an August built Series III license plate bolt from a June substitute!!!!

Thanks for the insight....I've been working on this car for several years. It's not a numbers matching car or anything. I've put a ton of $$$ into already with rust repairs and a full mechanical resto. I've got the body work yet to do and I'm changing the color from white to Black. I guess it's more of a tribute restoration than a true period resto. By the way, you mentioned Webers on your car....is there a weber set up for the series I engine?

John,
I hate to through a monkey wrench in your thinking, but the Series I and Series II whindshield frames do not interchange. I almost made that mistake, and bought a concours window frame for a Series I and thought it would work on my Series II, "NOT". So, I do have a great Series I windshield frame for sale. I will cost you less than to have your original rechromed. PM me and we can talk.

Hi John,

To install a single weber, you will require a manifold from a series IV, plus the weber and modify the linkage to suit. It is a very simple and popular swap and can be done on any Alpine. You may just need to play around with the jetting slightly depending on what the carburettor was suited to.

Regards, Robin.
