Strange Looking Alpine Heater Bezel

As the auction described.. they were on the very late SII alpines and used on the S3 sports models.

They are made of perspex like the switch escutcheons as per SI-3 and often are broken in the middle where the mounting screw goes.

Wow. I scored an NOS one about 8 years ago and complained I had to pay $80 for it. Did you see the final price on this one? Sheesh.

Looks like the bidding was cancelled at about $320, which means someone almost for sure paid more to stop the bidding. Does anyone know if ALL late Series II's and ALL Series 3 ST's have this hard to find piece?

John,

ALL S3 ST's had this bezel, the very late II's had them.. the easy way to tell is that the SI/Ii had raised lettering and ridges around the heater slots cast as part of the dash.. the very late cars will be flat in that area to allow the bezel to seat.

As for bidding.. it was cancelled as the guy had listed it as fitting all alpines and tigers and i emailed him to give the correct information. Ebay would not let him cancel the auction so late.. so he just canceled bids or outbid it himself

There was a batch of repro bezels made some (gulp, many?) years back by, I think, Rex Funk. I have one on my car and it is pretty close to correct. The font is slightly different, but you'd really need original and repro side-by-side to notice.

If it was Rex that made them, is he still involved with Alpines? If so, perhaps he can re-evaluate the economics of another batch now the going price is north of $250 ;-)

I'm not saying what he sold the first batch for, but I'm kicking myself for not ordering a spare!

Cheers,
Paul.
