Even knowledgeable WWII aviation buffs will tell you that the Spitfire never had external wing tanks. Not true:
OK, they were filled with beer, not fuel. After D-Day, there were regular "beer flights" to the thirsty British troops. An hour at 30,000 ft. was just right to chill it, giving the lie once more about the Brits. drinking warm beer. (Note that it still has the machine guns and 20mm cannon, in case some Kraut wanted to spoil the party.)
