Payne/Sheppard Sebring Alpine

Here's an interesting bit of news.... Steve Alcala, who owns the Payne/Sheppard Sebring Alpine, has finially acquired the original aluminum panels for this car.

Back in the mid-60's the Sebring Alpine was sold by Len Amato to Scott Dietz... Scott ended up selling the aluminum panels to Al Costner. Al, who raced in New England, moved to Ohio and sold his race car to Roy Stetina in Indiana. Steve then acquired the panels from the current owner of Roy's car.

So, this is a great development since it really puts the car back the way it was during the 62' race.

That is great to hear that the previous owners knew the value of what they had. Anyone else and they would be aluminium cans by now. On another note Steve, did you ever find out any more information on the Scottish rally winning Alpine?

Regards, Robin.

Steve,

Was that the black SII that had been in storage for a long time? I assume that there was either a few $ exchanged or he made a set of ally panels for him as a swap?

Micheal,

They weren't the panels from that car. I still don''t know where those panels came from.

Steve,

Great to hear that the panels have been reunited with the car. I don't have Steve's email at hand, but if you contact him again in the near future, you may want to ask him how many bolt holes are on the leading edge of the hood where the hood latches were located. The quantity may help to solve a mystery.

In the Sebring race photos, there is a picture of the #43 Miles/Spencer car with the hood up. There are six bolts located along the leading edge of the hood. Two on each corner and two in the center. The center bolts could have been a mounting point for a former hood latch. The #41 car has only four bolt holes, two on each corner. There are no race photos of the #42 Miles/Spencer car with the hood up. However, there is no evidence of two bolts located in the center of the hood in any of th other photos of the #42 car.

If the panels are original to Steve's car, and it sounds like they are, and there are four bolt holes along the leading edge, then that is another clue that Steve's car is the #42 Payne/Sheppard car and the #43 car went to Califonia and, as we know, disappeard.
