Numbers Question

I have a 1962 Sunbeam Alpine, Series II which has the number B9110209 stamped on the display plate and this same number is also stamped on the firewall in the correct location. There is a Chassis Number plate bearing the number 10368 which appears to be original and the engine number is stamped N392652CAL. The engine is a 1592 which is correct for the car. Does anyone have any idea where this engine number came from?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Does your oil dipstick go into the block or does it go into the oil pan?

The number looks a little like the SV series but not quite.

The block is likely from a Hillman.the alpine blocks wil all have the B9 prefix... Is it possible the N is an A ?? As N is not a prefix I know...

Is it possible it's a replacement block and a local authority have it a number???? That might explain the CAL at the end??

The oil dipstick goes into the oil pan just like it should. I've had this car since the 70's and just restored it about 5 years ago. Everything on the engine is correct for a 1592. It even has the original Zenith carbs.

The N is very clear and definitely not an A. I wondered about it being a replacement block and also am puzzled by the CAL at the end. In part, that is the reason for my post. I was hoping someone else might have run across a motor number also ending in CAL.

The replacement blocks usually had no numbers stamped on them I have a 1725 replacement block and no numbers on the flat in front of the oil filter.

George, from the factory no they didn't have numbers .. the suggestion is that it might be a replacement block and that a local authority has assigned it a number .. hence CAL might be California and the numbers so local reference.

Does California require that the engine number be registered? It's not required here.
