If you plan on driving the car beyond off and on a trailer make sure you get some air filters that prevent dust from going into the cylinders and wearing them.

At minimum you need the gauze oil coated mesh that should be inside those filter housings.

So can Collin assume that this 1494 block, now with the car's original alloy head and carbs, is just about the same as stock? Parts for a SI engine should all fit? Or is there something about a 1494 block on a Rapier II that is different than an Alpine I block?

The mesh is still in there. It's just hard to see in the picture.

It does appear to be a "Frankenengine". Rapier bottom end with Alpine head and carbs. It will be interesting to see whats inside this winter. Hopefully it has the high compression pistons. Would the cam be any different between the Rapier and the Alpine? The OD transmission that cam with the car has a 10 spline input shaft. That should be common, yes? The serial number of the OD is 25/3047/006156
The tranny has three lines of numbers cast into it
8 12 60
1DA15778
1980643

Collin,

If the engine your car came from was an iron head rapier it will have had the cam swapped out as the iron and alloy heads have different incompatible cams. Id guess ( just a guess) the block was sourced and the alpines top end was swapped on.

Just curious... what engine numbers do the replacement blocks now available have? Or none?

The number 8 12 60 on the gearbox tells you that it has a production date of the 12th of august 1960 which makes it an early one. This goes also with the 10 spines axle (course) while the late series V Alpines had fine splines.

Peter
