I've had some requests for some tips, so I made some vids.

I'll be getting into the mud work in more detail in the future. I just got a bug up my ass to do some serious spreading today.

I'm asking for some feedback here. Do you guys need these videos in more or less detail? I can record in higher resolution. A lot higher. This is as low as I can make it.

Looks like I need it in something other than Quicktime. The new edition of Quicktime does not seem to be Linux friendly.

Quicktime is required

I wish I could help everyone out, but I can't. I use to convert movies or videos like these to many formats for all, but that is very time consuming. I'm sure you can download the video and convert it to whatever format your computer will play. There are a lot of free programs out there that will do it. I use handbrake.

sorry

Terms

Not really sure where the term mud work came from. Pretty common term in these parts though. I'm sure you'll hear quite a few others. I do try not to swear too much, but one or two might slip out.

Seriously though. If there happens to be some term someone is unclear about. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

I hope the vids help some of you out. If nothing else it might open some eyes to how a lot of high end restorations go. It's quite involved as you can see.

I've finished my required work for the day, so I'm going to eat some lunch and work on my car.

Dura Glass vs. Rage Gold

John - Nice work on the videos, it makes me want to play hokey and go work on the car. Please explain why you used dura glass on the door handle and not bondo? Is there a rule of thumb to when you use duraglass and not a bondo type filler? Also, I would like to order a box of those flapper dust masks, please shoot me a PM with details on how to order.

thanks
Trevor

Why duraglass

As cocky as I am about my welds I still don't like to take a chance at the water or moisture getting into my mud. I just pack a bit of that duraglas in the welds that I can't get at the backside of to epoxy prime. I don't use the duraglas as my primary filler. I leave that job to Rage Gold by Evercoat.

Thank you. I try to do my best with the time that I have. I'll be getting into the mud work in more detail this weekend. It'll show how easy it really is with our sanders. They really do make all the difference. There's also a lot to said about the supplies I use.

New videos

Thanks everyone for your positive responses.

For anyone new to my project it would be best to start from the beginning to understand what it's been through.

In the next couple of days we'll be recording more videos. I'm going to show you guys what others would never share with you, because they're afraid of what you'd think. Mud has some kind of bad ora associated with it and it's just not the case any longer. At least not with the new premium fillers and other the products I use. I'm not saying it's going on a inch thick, but I'll would bet it's a solid 1/4" to 3/8" in some areas.
I have projects that are going on 12+ years now with very faint signs of shrinkage. In fact it takes a trained eye to find these areas that most would never see on a highly polished finish. A guy could easily wet sand the clear and they wouldn't even be noticeable.
I was going to drive my car in primer and let it settle down for the summer, fall and winter, but I feel so strongly about the new polyesters that I'm going straight to paint.

I got the good camera out for the new vids. They are the 2nd series vids.

Mud video part 1

We did some serious recording Sunday. I'm rendering part 2 as I type. It should be uploaded by this evening. In the mean time here's part 1.

The video is about 2 hours 44 minutes long. We didn't leave much out. Your best bet for uninterrupted video watching is to load the window. After the window loads, then press pause and leave it load for a bit before resuming play. At least if you have a connection like mine this is the best way. I have DSL.

Mud work video

Here's part 2 of the mud video

I downloaded part 1 today to make sure it worked. It did. I waited for the page to load, watch the progress bar for a bit and presses play. I played it for a bit and pressed pause and went back to work. I forgot about it and when I came back it downloaded the whole thing. The video is about 1.89 GB Pretty large file, but the video is 2 hours 44 minutes long.
The computer isn't quite what I make the vids on. The one I played it on is a PowerBook G4 It's about 6 years old now to give you some idea.

Anyways here the link
