Ignition!

Ladies & gents, we have ignition!:)

Still a few things to do prior to rolling the Air-pine to the flight line...

Carbs definately need to be set. Will have to read the carb tech note for sure:)...

Need to find and fix an oil leak...

Dynamo light stays on. Will need to track that down...

A basic coil wiring question?

The wiring diagram does not have +/- on it for the coil. The car is positive ground...ballast built-in the coil...does the wire to the distributor hook to the plus or minus pole on the coil?

It looks like the tach wire and the distributor wire go on the same pole and the hot (battery) wire on the other coil pole?

What a gorgeous day here in Atlanta. In the 60's for a while, felt like spring. Dropping fast though, already down to 55 :).

Thanks again. I am SOOOOO ready to drive! The Zeniths sound super!

Allen,

Is there a + and - marked on the coil? If so put the + side to the distributor. The distrbutor connects the coil to the ground (2 times per revolution),which in your case is +

The other pole of the coil goes to the battery by way of the wire through the tach and the ON position of the Ignition switch. The direct wire from the battery by way of the START position of the Ignition switch can also be connected to that point.

In a stock Alpine the wire from the tach goes to the ballast and then a wire from the ballast to the coil. The other wire to the coil that comes from the Start position of the ignition switch normally bypasses the ballast resistor and the tach during starting, providing a larger voltage for the spark. Since you have replaced the stock coil with one that has a built in ballast, there is no need for the second wire to the coil, but you can leave it connected to the same point as the wire from the tach and thus you will bypass the tach during starting.

If you have the wire from the tach connected to the coil where the distributor wire is connected, I don't think the tach will respond.

Hi Allan,

Great to hear you're making great progress with your project. Being a positive earth car, the wire from the distributor should go to the positive on the coil to keep the correct polarity.

Regards, Robin.
