What color of paint or plating was on the original exhaust brackets for a Series 3 when they left the factory?

The replacments I have used in the past, when you could get NOS parts, were painted a gloss black!

which bracket are you talking about? the center,over the axle or under the trunk floor?

They are all sheetmetal based and painted gloss black. I have a few NOS hangers here.

All of my brackets are in good shape, but covered with undercoating. When I removed the coating, it stripped the paint.

I suspect the truly original factory-installed brackets were mild steel and unpainted when installed on the line. However, all the replacements I've seen were painted with a thin coat of gloss black.

IMHO one should never entirely rely on replacement parts to be the 'official' color, since the replacement parts were often made by other suppliers at a later date and would likely have been painted with different paint, and also replacement parts had to be prepared to survive on the shelf without rusting, so sometimes replacement parts were painted whereas the original assembly-line installed parts may have had no paint at all.
