distributor pedestal o-ring/gasket?

Between the block and the distributor pedestal, is there supposed to be a rubber seal/o-ring as well as a gasket?
There is bevel on my block (1725, not original) which would seem to be for an o-ring, and there is an old squashed deformed rubber thing on my (SII original) pedestal that doesn't seal very well...
Or can it just rely on a gasket?

Never seen anything but a gasket from the pedestal to the block. There is am O ring on the distributor shaft
that seals on top of the pedestal & distributor.
