I'm just sprucing up the defroster box and I was wondering if others have a thin layer of foam sheeting on the butterfly wings and if so, why and if it's necessary.

I assume you mean the plate that moves from Screen to Car postion. If so , yes, I have thin foam on mine. The purpose is to make a good seal when in the full Screen or Car postion - to try to deflect ALL the air in the chosen direction.
