Roger Hall, who served in the OSS (precursor to the CIA) in WWII has just died, age 89. He wrote a great book in 1957 You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger about his exploits and those of his OSS colleagues.
My favorite is about after training in England with the SOE (now MI6) being dropped in occupied France to lead a team of Resistance fighters to destroy a Tiger tank stationed at a key crossroads. Instead, the agent, who spoke fluent French, dressed like a French postman and walked up to the tank alone and yelled "mail!"
The lid opened and in went two grenades.
