All British Field Meet Portland, Oregon

I am working on getting the All British Field Meet in Portland, OR to get more serious about Sunbeams and Rootes vehicles. Currently right now at the annual show they offer only two classes, Sunbeam Alpines, and Tigers. The issue with that is with the Alpine class. What's been happening is that the "Proper Alpines"(1950's era) are being lumped in with the series Alpine's (1959-1968) and it creates a lot of confusion and frustration those of us who own Alpines. I have spoken to the committee several times and what they are telling me is that I need to drum up some support from other Alpine owners who would consider attending the event and participating if there were a class specifically for their group of vehicles. Moving forward I would like to see other Rootes vehicle included as well but right now I am going to start with Alpines. So for those of you who are in the NW or would consider attending the ABFM meet can you please shoot me a note telling me if you would support this? I will take any support I get back to the committee to help them decide on this. Thanks for you time and support.

your show is not the only one around the country that does this. you'll find the early alpines and the fastback alpines in the class with the series alpines. they don't separate by year. just tiger or alpine. there are some shows on the east coast where the cars are sorted by year so you may be in a class with all other british marques. at the Pittsburgh vintage grand prix british show the alpines are in the same class with tigers. this show usually has over 400 cars of all makes. at the Dayton show the early alpines and fastbacks are in with the series alpines and the tigers have their own class. we had a smaller turnout of alpines and tigers due to early morning rain but we still had 18 total alpines and tigers. after 40+ years of shows and the attitudes of the folks running the shows and the amount of cars showing up, it probably won't change.

Wish I could've made the Portland ABFM this year. I hate going a year without autocrossing the Alpine. What kind of Sunbeam turnout?

Up north at the Western Washington ABFM, we have a third Rootes class, which has been called "other" or "saloon" class.

It's usually a question of numbers. Typically at Portland, Peter Woodill and maybe one or two other owners (Cardiff's?) bring their Talbots. I'm guessing Jerry Rathburn brought his 1970 Alpine GT fastback this year and possibly Budd Bennion entered his Husky. Realistically, that's enough for one combined extra class. (Were there more this year?) But what to call the class? "Other" is so blah, while Woodill's Mark Alpine isn't a "saloon."

TE/AE concours rules have a class for RARE ROOTES. anything other than series alpines and tigers are in this class.

I took pictures. Very nice event and loved seeing the older cars. As soon as I find a place to post them I will share the link.

PS-Great people driving Sunbeams up here.

The British car scene in Portland has been strong since I was a kid in High School up there. There were always other 'Lucas specialists' nodding their head at me as I drove by them in my Bugeye Sprite. Though i don't remember there being an All British Field Meet when I lived there I'm sure it's a good one to go to every year.

"Rare Rootes" sounds as good as anything. I hear the Portland meet had 3 "proper" Alpines plus another 3 Sunbeam-Talbots. If they could guarantee that kind of turnout every year they'd have an extra trophy class.

Also among the 700+ British iron on hand: a 1934 Hillman Aero Minx. Looks like a Singer roadster of the period. Notable for having an all-synchro tranny on later cars.
