I have an early SI and I'm trying to figure out what size engine I have. The engine number is 1980628 built 5-31-60.
Thanks, Ken

Ken,

What is the serial number stamped in the boss just below the tappet cover in front of the oil filter base?

That number would help trace.

Hope this helps,

I believe the the 8 should be a B. This is a 1500CC series 1 engine. If the is original to the car it will match the chassis number.

It is a B and it does match the chassis number. Thanks.

I thought they had two different engines the 1494 and 1592, am I wrong?

What do the other numbers on the other side of the block mean? 1980628 31-5-60. 31-5-60 is the manufacturing date but I don't recognize the other. It is a batch number?

Ken,

Your number in question, 1980628, is probably a block casting reference number. At this point, it seems no one is positive if it's a foundry number referencing a Rootes drawing number or a Rootes assigned number. I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried to compile a listing for these numbers.

That number doesn't match any of the four(?) 1494 block numbers in the parts manual.

Hope this helps,
