I am not sure where Thornton's got those settings. I always gap the top ring at 25thou and the lower rings at 15thou. These settings were recommended to me by a very experienced Alpine racer and I have never had any problems. In my opinion the top ring needs to have enough room to expand, if the gap is too tight there is a real risk of it breaking. The other rings have an easier life and can be a little tighter. A lot of people just gap the rings at 25thou for each one (which I think is what several of the manuals state). Tim R
