I hope you are wrong about that and the cars were stored in warehouses away from the fire area.

I know one collection was actually moved into a CVS parking lot, away from the fire. It included Mercedes 300SL's and similarly multi-million dollar cars. Hopefully they were unmolested while there.

The 2025 Los Angeles wildfires have provided incomprehensible scenes and stories. This tale is linked to the Sunbeam community and the B9116252 Harrington Le Mans (HLM).



For many years HLM B9116252 languished in California, USA. Until a true car enthusiast, with many automobiles and motorcycles, came upon and acquired this gem as an estate was being processed. The acquisition brought joy to the new owner. After some months the HLM was able to start up and was marginally capable of being driven around a parking lot. As is the case with many of us in the collector car World we find a unique rescue project that needs to be with someone else that has more time to work on the venture. Thus, was the case for this HLM. A terrific gentleman from Texas gained uplifting enjoyment with last years purchase of B9116252. Moving forward with efforts to resurrect the streamlined body and mechanics to better days. This is where the story gets interesting, fortuitous, and sad.

We all take pride with the ownership derived from any vintage and/or new automobile. There’s something about the interactions between various states of molecules collectively propelling us down a pathway emitting exhilarating emotions. G forces, wind in the face, checks and balances of foot/hand pressures that keep us from disaster. Sometimes racing on the edge just for the adrenaline rush. I suspect we all know that moment when the fine line was crossed and disaster prevailed. Hopefully, we walk away unscathed. Most of the time we live with the recovery from sore muscles, a few scratches and bruises, deflated egos thinking we had total control.

The recent Wildfires in Los Angeles demonstrate that there are times when we don’t have actual control over our destiny. Fortunately HLM B9116252 now resides in Texas. The place where it previously called home, Altadena, California. Right in the middle of the Eaton Fire. This is where the previous owner of HLM B9116252 lost his home and his entire car/motorcycle collection. As these words are written I relive the empty, sad, and sick feelings that overcame my being when I received this news. At 4 am the heroic decision of the previous owner to whisk his wife and kids into their daily vehicle to safety just before their sanctuary was destroyed by fire says a lot about what is most important in our world. May our best thoughts go out to all who have lost so much from the calamity ensued by wildfire devastation.
