Wiring turn signal switch question

I was wondering if someone could help answer a couple of electrical questions for me? I am rewiring my Series 2 Alpine (with an older Rebel wiring harness- for an Alpine) and had a question about the turn signal switch.

If I'm reading the diagram correctly the:
1) green w/ red striped wire goes to the driver side lights
2) green w/ brown striped wire goes to the passenger side lights
3) Brown w/ black striped wire goes to the horn ?? Is it the supply power supply to the horns??
4) Green w/ white wire I am unsure where what this goes to

5) When wiring the Ignition light that is on lower left on the tachometer… on the wiring harness I have a wire indicating it goes to the "alternator exciter-generator light". Is that the correct light I should be wiring it to?

I have added photos of the wires and a wiring diagram I am working off of. Thank you in advance!!!

Sincerely,
Todd

Sorry about that, I'll try again, maybe the files were too big (it seems to work on my computer so I didn't realize they didn't work). Thanks!!Sunbeam Wiring .jpegTurn Signal Switch.jpegTach.jpeg

I find that color coded diagram hard to decode, since many wires have dual colors. Try page 52 in the WSM 124 Section N: https://sunbeamalpine.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/15-Electrical-System-N.pdf

Here is my read of the stock wiring diagram. Double check what I am seeing. (I assume the Rebel harness uses different colored wires than the stock wiring harness?)

Green + red = LH side flasher
Green + white = RH side flasher
Black + red = LH gauge indicator (tachometer) ?
Black + white = RH gauge indicator (speedometer) ?
Green + brown goes to the thermal flasher "L" connection

Brown + black wire is supplying current to the flasher switch, and also supplies current to the horn.

I assume the ignition exciter light is the red ignition light bulb in the tachometer.

Mike, On the SII diagram the turn switch is also a headlight flasher

Or maybe I misunderstand the term "Flasher" switch.

Hi Tom,

Series V diagram calls it a flasher switch, too. I don't see any connections on the Series II wiring diagram going from the flasher switch to the headlamps. I don't have a Series II, so obviously I could be wrong.

Todd,

Sorry , but I got distracted by several personal events. Did you get it sorted out?

no worries!! So did, I’m just seeing your message this morning. Not completely I think I know what wire go to what, but still not sure how to wire it. The Rebel wiring harness only show 3 wires to the turn signal switch and doesn’t mention the 4th wire for the horn. I’ve added a 2 photo of a supplemental diagrams that Rebel has supplied. Question: do I run a wire from the connection from the flasher and turn signal switch (for right/left turn) to the indicator lights that are in the gauges? I don’t see that on the wiring diagram.

as I type this I’m maybe understanding it… the power wire goes to the flasher relay from there the wires go to the turn signal switch wires. I just ignore the horn wire. As a side note I don’t have the internal mechanism for the horn. I have a wooden steering wheel that has a center push button but no internals. I was thinking of just adding a button to put somewhere on the fast to activate it.

As always. I really appreciate your time!!

I think I see part of the problem. You may have a flasher switch from a later Series Alpine. On the Series I and Series II there are a pair of turn indicators, the LH one is in the dial of the Tach and the RH one is in the dial of the Speedo. There are extra contacts in the flasher switch to control these indicators. On Series III thru SV there is just one turn indicator telling you that the flasher is blinking. The connection to that one indicator comes right from the flasher unit, as shown in your drawing from Rebel above.

Regarding the horn wiring, it seems they use the flasher switch as simply handy junction point to bring the horn wire into the steering column. Ther are no horn contacts in any flasher switches.

Another problem, of course, is that the wiring diagram you are apparently using has color codes presumably for the replacement harness. But that diagram does not show the original colors that are still in place on the switch and lamp fixtures. for that you need to see the original diagram here:

The photo you posted shows the 3 wires for the flasher: The green/ white wire goes to the Right-side lamps - front and rear. The Green -Red wire goes to the Left side lamps. The green/ brown wire with all the green tape on it, goes to the L terminal on the flasher unit. The black/ brown wire goes somewhere, depending on what Series the switch is actually from??

Since the switch you have does not have the separate contacts for the dashboard indicators you could wire the two indicators in parallel and connect them to the P terminal of the flasher unit so they both blink at the same time, just like the single indicator of the later Series Alpines.

Replace thermal flasher with solid state and then connect dash gauge indicators to the same wires as left and right signals.

How old is the wiring harness that you are putting in? It looks like the one that existed before
the one that I put together with Rebel. If you'd like PM me your email address and I'll send you
a much more simplified way to hook this up. I have this older harness in my car and can work with
you to get yours right. I stopped sending the instructions that Rebel includes with the harness. Seems
that, although they might work for Fords and Chevys, they tend to just confuse people with our cars!
