Wheels, tires on Series V

I plan to install a set of Minilite-like 14" wheels on our Series V. It seems to me that 175-70 x 14 tires should work. I know little about Tigers but my belief is that it was the Alpine body with a Ford engine and the larger 14" wheels. (I remember them running autocrosses in the 1960s and they went great in a straight line but couldn't turn efficiently. But, that's another story.)

Is my plan viable?

Thanks

The tigers used the 13" wheels as well. Owmebsr may have upgarded them back in the day, but factory was 13.

I run 14" superlites on my alpine and tiger. On the alpine i run 175x60 (they are quite a small rolling raidiud in practice) on the tiger i have run 195x55 and now have 195x60's.

Is the body the same for the Tiger and the Alpine?

The rolling circumference of the 175 - 70 x 14 tires is ~7% larger than stock. For Road Rally work I'll have to correct for that but it seems tolerably within spec.

I have a Halda Tripmaster that I've had since 1966 and plan to use it along with a Curta and a Stevens, if anyone knows what those things are. However, I see modern electronic odometers that would make the calibration easier than changing the X and Z gears. Any experience with those?

As jarrid stated the tiger used the same basic body as the alpine (was based on it) in terms of bodyword where it concerns the wheels the body is the same.

if you need to rebuild the trip master speak to a gauge shop like moma or nosinger.. they may be able to help.. otherwise a specialist watchmaker that deals in heuers and other timing equipment

Tires and Wheels

Search the site, this has been covered thoroughly.

I have many sunbeams and found this looks best in my opinion:

13" wheels, 185 x 70

14" wheel, 205 x 60 (or 195 x 60 and 205 x 60)

15" wheel, 205 x 50 and 225 x 50

I am running 185/60-14 on mine, and they just miss the front and rear fenders. I would think any bigger and they will hit.

You say it "...looks best....". Do they fit within the wheel wells?

Your car looks great. How wide are the wheels?

Thank you
My wheels are Panasport 14x6.5 STD rear wheel drive offset. In the front they are straight down from the fender flare. On my Ser II, if I go any wider they will by wider than the body in the front, not sure about Ser V.
I have owned this car 34 years and have had a lot of wheels on it, I think the 14" Panasports look the best.

I have a 4" backspace (which could have been 4-1/4") on my 15x6 Minilites what is the backspace on your Panasports? I would have liked more backspace on the front but as it is I only have about 5/8" clearance between the ball joint and rim; the rears are not an issue since the Ford 8" was made to order.

Backset (or offset, depending on your point of view) is terribly important. A set of wheels with the wrong offset will cause problems with a 165R tire.

I have 15" VTOs with 4.4 inch backspace on my series 2. I could have gone with more backspace in the front, but not much more on the back. I'm running 195/55-15.

Wire wheels

I have a '65 with wire wheels / knock offs - Question: If I want to put on the newer style rims that I see in the photos ,what happens to the hubs that are on my car ? i.e is it a major job to change from center mount splined hubs to lug nut version ??

Converting to bolt-ons is not very complicated, it involves replacing the hubs front and rear.

The rear ones are specific on the SV, the fronts are the same for all years.

The biggest issue is getting the rear hubs off as it requires a special puller.
