Looks like a square aftermarket speaker to me. Last radio like that I saw had a speaker firing out the bottom of the unit itself.

That car really does reek of barn freshness.

Motorola made both for the late SV and MK2 and late Tigers. Some VW's have the same little box in the back under window. This one appears to be slightly earlier with the white face and different knobs .
