SV IDLER ARM ASSY

has anyone replaced the "sealing ring" in the idler arm assy? As far as i can tell from my originals, the top and the bottom are definitely NOT the same.
Is there a source for replacements?
is there a reasonable need to reproduce these?

Also, is there a common upgrade to add a zirc fitting instead of the bolt for lubricating?

Thanks for the reference.
I took a look and they do offer a kit. I believe its only the bushes. But I emailed them anyway to ask.

The seals/boots are not available from them.
If everyone sees the need, Ill recreate these in CAD and send it to my supplier for quote.
Cast silicon. Probably 60 A Shore.

Ok, noted with thanks. Should be certain interest out there. Nobody else is doing them. Provided price is reasonable - put me in for 2 pairs...

Jim, This video may be of use. It shows us changing the bushes on a Series V idler.

Very useful video.
Definitely follows my progress so far.
The upgrade to a Zirc fitting is nice. That was something i was wondering about. Now I have to find a 1/4-28 UNF short fitting.
My main concern is the rubber seals. I noticed in your video that the seals seem to be DIY. Without sealing integrity, the entire assembly is prone to contamination. especially with the proximity to the road.
Any source for replacements? I would think these would be vital.
Thanks

I noticed in the beginning of the video, it shows replacement parts. what are those and where werer they sourced?

Jim,
The replacement parts came from (now closed)_ Speedy Spares. I think most Alpine specialists will sell these. The seals are DIY, they were as good as I could get at the time. Ideally I would have more close fitting, sealing rubbers but these do seem to keep virtually all the rubbish off.

Obviously a repro of those rubber seals will make a lot of sense. Saying that since my SV steering idler deserves a proper repair ( getting more noisy recently). Have the kit & the bushes, but lack the seals. Could make some myself cutting from matching rubber tubes, but would prefer proper replacements...

Best i can tell from measuring the originals that are lightly deteriorated.
ID = Ø1.3125 X 3/32
Upper = .375in height
Lower = .39in height

I searched diligently and cannot find a suitable tube

Here is a company in Georgia that can lathe cut them. Never used them before but getting an rfq can't hurt.
I would recommend making them from BUNA-N. It is cheap and oil and grease resistant.

If i reproduce them, I will build a mold and cast them from 60A shore silicon

I have already had them quoted from my suppliers but the cost would be $50 a set at 100 sets quantities.

Compression molding them would be considerably more expensive because the tooling would have to be amortized.

Silicone does not strike me as the best choice of elastomer for this application. check the oil resistance.

Cost is high so we definitely need more volume. Did anyone talk to Sunbeam Specialties or Curt for potential interest ? Remember that Rick always had good/cheap rubber suppliers in Taiwan . I could check w Rootes Parts in Holland in parallel...

I did email Rootes Holland and they are not interested
I have not discussed it with SS. As we are neck deep with the dash reproduction's right now. Perhaps in February after the first dash production run is complete.

Jim, thanks for your update regarding Rootes Holland. So I can spare my effort there. Hope that SS might still be interested. If I have the chance I may discuss with the UK dealers though. Perhaps it would make sense to check whether the Rootes archive has factory drawings to assure proper reproductions. I have a contact there so will try.,,
