Sunbeam Owners in Canada

Hello...I'm not seeing any BC Sunbeams shown here. I am in Kelowna & own 1966 SV Alpine. Car was purchased brand new from Chrysler dealership in Penticton, BC & has gone through 3 owners before I bought it, has never left BC. 3rd owner did an extensive restoration in early 90's then parked since 2022. Be interested in locating Alpine owners in Southern BC area & rest of province...I had a S3 back in 1974 & been hooked ever since !
Am in the Fraser Valley, 62 S-2 with a S-1 motor. Just pulled the wires of, going to get the old rubber pulled off and going to soda blast them in the next week or two before installing new skins

Get my parts from a place called Carry-On Parts in Aldergrove here in the valley, lady who runs it is lovely and they do all British parts.

Thank you Semmy...great news ! I'm rebuilding S5 1792, in shop taking long time. I'm considering doing EV to S5, looking for any info...

Zero knowledge on EV conversions, sorry boss.
Received call from mechanic working on rebuilding my SV 1.792cc, block can be rebuilt & now looking for rebuild kit(s). Cylinder sleeve(s) need to be sourced to accommodate pistons 1/16" boring. I'm not technical enough to present clearer picture so hope members get what I'm talking about. Canadian parts distributors out there ?

Give her a call, she seems to be quite good at tracking things down and connecting buyers/sellers

Hi All,
Troy here in sunny White Rock. My partner has a 1960 Alpine, which we are looking for mechanic recommendations for a gearbox rebuild.

Troy,

Welcome to the club and the forum.

I'll have to ask WHY you think you may need a rebuild for your transmission. Is it something other than the "whining" gear noise in first and reverse along with the inability to shift into first gear until stopped, without grinding?

Those two issues have to do with the design of the transmission and no amount of repair work will change the issue. The early Alpines utilized NON-synchronized first/reverse gears which use straight cut gear teeth. Straight cut gear teeth are naturally more noisy than beveled gear teeth - they "whine" under load. The simplest way to deal with the non-synchro first gear when coming to a stop is to shift to SECOND gear just before stopping and then shift into first gear when fully stopped. Just requires developing a different habit of driving to accommodate the old transmission design. Crash shifting into first gear while moving is abuse.

If you find those issues too annoying, You could replace your trans with a latter model all synchro gear box.

I found this video that has a first gear start at just after 16"15'. The microphone doesn't pick up the sound well and the driver isn't putting it under much load, so listen closely. In fact, at another start from standstill, I think the driver started off in second gear.

Hope this helps,

Hi everyone, my dad has a Sunbeam that I’m looking to restore. Located in Toronto, does anyone know someone that I can take it, to get it restored? It’s in rough shape

When you say rough....do you mean lots of rust?

Maybe post some photos of the car...sills , underside X structure especially at the ends and inner wheel arches and floors.

If it's a very rusty car and you are paying to do the work. It could get very expensive very quickly

I am in process of total rebuild of 1725 Series V. Has been in shop for 10 months with majority of time spent in machine shop with long waiting list. Expect her back in couple months. Should be well worth the wait !

Hi Rodney, Also in Kelowna any suggestions for sourcing parts locally? Just picked up a Alpine couple of weeks ago and hoping to get her road worthy again they sure are nice cars when finished
Hello...Didn't notice your text...Rebuild of my 1725 SV engine involved scoring most parts from Sunbeam Specialties (CA) but was pleasantly surprised to find a supplier in Aldergrove (BC) & I will forward info to you shortly. I've also dealt with private individuals from USA which worked out great. I was fortunate to find a mechanic in Kelowna who agreed to do mechanical work for '66 SV who has had the car in their garage, off of the ground, for past year. The Machine shop took about 8 months to rebuild the engine with instalment in few more months. You have photos ? Be cool to see your Alpine...

I am in the lower mainland of BC. My new Alpine series ll will arrive on Wednesday then I have to get it inspected apply for collectors plates then wait for a dry day to go for a cruise! I’ve always wanted one of these cars. So excited it is finally happening!
Good for you...Series II is great model, I had Series III years ago...Maybe meet up with you one day in beautiful BC...
