Sunbeam Alpine: Overcoming hot starting problems.

If you have been experiencing problems with re-staring your car during the recent hot weather, this video that we have just published on The Sunbeam Alpine Channel on YouTube may be of interest. Our car never used to have this problem but running on 'modern' fuels has made it increasingly difficult to start after you have stopped on a hot day. This can be very frustrating. Making the minor changes that we show in this video totally cured the problem for us, the car now starts immediately, hot or cold. It should do the same for you. This approach will help the hot starting of all classic cars, not just Sunbeam Alpines.

Excellent video, I'm going to try this. I have hot starting problems in my 62 Alpine...such a pain. In fact, my car is sitting right now cooling down just a mile away for that very reason. Takes the fun out of driving. What diameter fuel line and one-way valve do you recommend?

We are using 8mm pipe and 8mm one-way fuel valve. Keeping the fuel cooler certainly helps with this problem. Some people in the U.K. have added an electric fuel pump to their system that they only switch on when it is very warm. The fuel supply is split under the car and comes to the engine in different pipes without ever going near anything that is hot. One my son's Alpines they only have electric pumps but I like to keep the standard one and just pipe it so that out is cooler.

Thank you, I'll give it a try...I like your way, keeping the standard pump with some re-routing of the piping....

Do you have a single carb setup? I'm wondering how best to attach connect it to the dual carbs...

Leigh we have the excellent Alpine Innovations Club carb set-up. This is a single twin choke Weber on a curved manifold. It revolutionises an Alpine. Better in every respect. We are playing around with the piping at the moment, trying to keep it as simple as possible and to maximise the flow of cool petrol into the hot pump and carb. Once we have finalised the best way we think we can do it we will release a video.
The problem is caused because even though modern petrol burns much hotter than older petrol did it boils at around 36*C whereas older petrol boiled at around 85*C. It doesn't even have to be that hot for the petrol to be visibly boiling in the glass bowl of the pump.
