Series II - Carb to Manifold Gasket

Aside from just a simple pair of flat paper gaskets that live under the pair of Zenith's.....
Should I really have a taller, thicker gasket item?
I'm referring to part #282 in the image below...

Maybe a phenolic spacer?
Anyone have those?
All I have are the quite thin paper gaskets.
Thanks

Thicker phenolic spacers are not readily available. You may cut your own gaskets from thicker gasket material. It will work fine since the Zeniths feature an incorporated heat insulator between the butterfly housing and the main body...

They dont like Australian summer traffic... They stumble when you move away in stop start from heat soak.. before I went to the DCOE's I ended up using a black plastic phenolic gasket that was about 8mm thick with a paper gasket each side.. that seemed to help

Never experienced that in our rather " normal" climate. Even on the hottest Summer days with 35°C. Australian summer may be more challenging though. Especially if you run the original metal fuel line close to the engine. I've partially replaced it with rubber hoses before entering the Zeniths...

Can anyone tell me the thickness?
That way I may be able to create something to mimic the original design.
Thanks!

I may have a spare set. I have to navigate across the backyard ice to the shop to go dig for them.

Rick

I just checked. I thought I had one spare set, but I was wrong. I had three spare sets. Ha. But they are on spare carbs. Gimme some time to carefully remove them and they are yours for the price of shipping. I'll try to get to it by tomorrow and let you know.
Rick

See if these look like what you need. They came off nicely. Hard to tell, but looks like the gaskets may not be there on either side. May be real thin and compressed. On my carbs in my car, the gasket's outside diameter is ever so slightly larger than the spacer.

If you want them, PM me your mailing address.

My bad. I am just noticing you need the lower spacer, not the one in the carb. Duh. Lemme check for those as I may have them as well.

Sorry. Tired today.

Rick

WTF. None of the spare Zenith carb sets I have, all mounted on manifolds, have those spacers. All have the heat insulator Bernd mentions however. Odd that they are missing from my entire spares collection. So if you are missing the heat insulators, which I have pictured, you are welcome to them.

Again, sorry for the false alarm.
Rick

I do have those heat insulators.
Yea...I was seeking the items that live under the carburetors atop the inlet manifold.

I'm not aware about anybody offering those currently. Like with so many early parts-> low demand ->really sadening. Occasionally you may find them with NOS early head sets, but also becoming scarce.
Would recommend you to cut them by yourself - they are not complicated to make...

Have never seen such a "sandwich" gasket for the early series & doubt that it ever existed from the factory...

Hi Matt ... I checked my extra intakes w/carbs and none of them including the one on my 62' has those. I'm not an expert on these kittens but after looking at the info and referring to the tech data ... I'm inclined to believe those were used for a specific application? .. if you notice on the parts list it's last? (#282) .. 2 others where before it ... might have been for the bat wing setup? .. All the dual Zenith set-ups I've seen or had all had the bug catchers so that might be why mine and others here don't have 'em. .. the different air filter option ... Just a thought. My girl runs just fine with a good pair of gaskets so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

That is very interesting David. May be on to something there! I was looking at the parts book image, more that this detail. Thank you for this layout. I'm having trouble just finding stand alone base gaskets, but I may just reuse mine, as I have a mere 15 miles on the car; ha!

Matt ... some photo's of "your" gaskets please! .. I forgot to ask if you were trying to replace ones you had (#282) or just saw them in the tech mani. What air filter system did your girl come with or have now ?

.... David
