Removing an engine Alpine 3

Hello everyone
I’m taking the engine out of my series 3 and was wondering if someone could tell me where to attach the chains on the engine. I’m taking the engine and transmission out as one.

If you take that out as a unit, make sure your car is fairly high up in front. You'll need a load leveler/load stabilizer
in order to tilt the unit out. I've attached the chains to loops that go under two head bolts, one in front and one in
the rear diagonally opposed to each other. While it sounds easier to pull this as a unit, unless you have the proper
tools available ( and some help too) it may be easier to split the engine and trans. I've done them both ways and
usually work by myself, I tend to split the two as you don't have the car up so high and it's easier to control.
 
My $.02

Tim, to take the engine AND

trans out together requires

a BIG angle change.

I think I MAY have tried it

ONCE, ONLY.

Or, more likely, I learned

NOT to do it that way on other

cars...

SO, with an Alpine, I take

only the engine out.

If the trans needs to come

out, I take it afterwards.


As far as where to attach

to the engine, I do it so

infrequently, I likely never

do it the same way twice.

But I usually use an engine

leveler and attach near the

back on the intake side.

And attach in the front on the

right side at one of the

timing cover bolts.

And/or ditto sunalp...

Thanks you. I think I’ll also split them. That way I won’t need a leveler either.

Also, do I need to support the gear box with blocking to stop it from dropping down?

I put a rope around the tranny and tied the ends up thru the forward tunnel plate and put a bar or block of wood thru the loop. This frees up space under the car and you can push the car around if needed.
I have used the front plate to take out the top three bell housing bolts with a long wobble socket.
 
Thanks for the reply. But I find that confusing. Probably because I’ve never doe this job before.
 
Don't need a leveler if one can pull at the location right above the Sunbeam letters on the valve cover.

I always fit and remove the engine and gearbox as one unit, I find that much easier than separating them. The trick is to raise the rear of the car about 6-8" off of the ground then the whole lot will come out nice and sweetly. Tim R

I think you need to look at how Jan did that...it was a custom built bracket to pull the motor .. if you try and lift the motor with the original hook/loop bracker on the front of the motor it will definitely bend... if not snap and likely a lot of expensive bodywork will be required .. you need to be able to brace the motor Front to rear.. jans bracket did that....
If you use the factory bracket on the front and the L shaped one on the rear of the head.. you will need a balance bar to help.

Tim if you are getting ready to pull the engine/trans.. a few suggestions.

Gather all the info and write a list with boxes next to each step that you can tick off as you go before each next step

Simple things can cause issues later... Example.. pulling the engine and trans but forgetting to remove the shift lever... Ask how I know! ( Don't)

Disconnect the earth strap .. take off manifolds and put all the bolts on a piece of tape to hold them in the order they came out in ( label frony of motor and back onto he tape)

Some simple things that help you keep track of what's been done/needs to be done. And keeps things together for reassembly

Also.. lots of photos when you are doing the proces
