Horn steering wheel column gremlin

Having the strange case of the horn engaging when I pull hard on the steering wheel like when maneuvering for parking. Only when I pull on the top of the wheel. Horn ring works all the way around. I know there's a copper ring inside the column happens with column collapsed or extended. I'm using 185*70 r13 tires so it's a little hard to turn in close quarters and requires extra efforts on the wheel. Mostly an annoyance I would like to try to eliminate.. Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting tips.

I suspect that the gap just needs adjusting on the rings where it makes earth. If the gap is too small, a little deflection (like pulling hard on the wheel when slow speed driving) will flex things and make the rings touch.

How do you do that? Do you have to take the cowling off of the steering column? Is the gap adjustment obvious. I've never been in there. thanks Pics available?

Mbgardner, The answers for most queries like this will be on The Sunbeam Alpine Channel on YouTube. In this video you can see the steering wheel set up and it shows the rings that power the horn. It is a simply adjustment of three screws that fit into insulated caps. You wind them in and out to adjust the gap. I hope that this helps.

Once you are in there its pretty obvious- One trick that will save you a lot of fiddling around -You will often find some small washers under the horn ring mounting screws , these are there to level off the horn ring and give it the clearence off the steering wheel spokes to work. A small piece of tape over the end of the screws will hold these washers in place when you re-install the horn ring
